GEO for Solopreneurs: How to Get Cited by AI Search When You're a Team of One

If you run marketing alone, the highest-leverage change you can make this quarter is to write so AI answer engines can quote you. The payoff is measurable: visitors who arrive from ChatGPT convert at 15.9 percent and from Perplexity at 10.5 percent, against 1.76 percent for traditional organic search (Seer Interactive). The volume is still small, but the intent is high and the field is wide open. This is exactly the kind of work a team of one can win.

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of structuring content so tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude cite it in their answers. It is not classic SEO with a new label, and treating it that way is the first mistake.

Ranking on Google and getting cited by AI are now two different games

In mid-2025, 76 percent of AI Overview citations came from Google's top 10 results. By early 2026 that overlap had fallen to 38 percent by one measure and as low as 17 percent by another (Leapd). Only 11 percent of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. So "I rank well on Google" no longer means "AI will quote me." These are diverging systems, and you have to play both.

What actually earns a citation: facts, not flourish

The most-cited content is dense with verifiable detail. The Princeton GEO study (KDD 2024) tested this directly: adding relevant statistics lifted a page's citation visibility by up to 40 percent, adding authoritative source citations by 30 to 40 percent, and adding expert quotations by 28 to 41 percent (Aggarwal et al.). Vague, adjective-heavy copy gets skipped. A sentence with a number and a named source gets lifted into the answer.

Lead with the answer

44 percent of all AI citations come from the first third of a page (Princeton GEO study). So open every page, and every section, with a direct one or two sentence answer that contains a number or a named source, then explain underneath. The paragraph you are reading does exactly that. Burying your conclusion under 400 words of throat-clearing is how you lose the citation.

Your website is only half the work

Reddit alone accounts for roughly 40 percent of citations across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews combined (Contently, Soar). Domains with a genuine community presence on Reddit and Quora are cited roughly four times more often than those without (SE Ranking via CMSwire). The lesson for a solo operator: the same idea, published on your site and echoed where people actually discuss your topic, compounds. Answer real questions where your buyers already are. Do not spam links, participate.

This is a solo founder's game to win

Freshness is weighted heavily. Recently updated content earns about 3.2 times more AI citations than stale pages, and content refreshed within 30 days is weighted far higher than year-old pages (Mersel AI). Perplexity, the quickest engine to pick up new content, rewards recency directly. An enterprise needs three approvals and a quarterly calendar to update a page. You can rewrite an opening paragraph and refresh three statistics in an afternoon. Speed and focus are the advantages you actually have, so use them.

Skip the busywork: llms.txt is not the lever

You will see advice to add an llms.txt file so AI crawlers can find you. Skip it. Across hundreds of millions of AI bot requests the share touching llms.txt is negligible, and a SE Ranking study of more than 300,000 domains found no measurable citation improvement (Limy.ai). Google's John Mueller compared it to the long-discredited keywords meta tag. Spend that hour on your content structure and one good community answer instead.

What to do this week

Three moves, all doable solo:

  • Publish one answer-first post. Lead with a 60-word direct answer to a real question, then add 3 to 4 sourced statistics through the body, roughly one every 150 to 200 words. Budget two to three hours.
  • Answer one or two real questions a week in a community your buyers use (Reddit, Quora, a niche forum). Link only when it genuinely helps. This compounds over a couple of months.
  • Update your top three existing pages: move the key answer into the first 60 words, refresh the statistics, and add a visible "Updated [month year]" line.

FAQ

How long before AI starts citing me? Early case studies commonly report first citations in four to eight weeks, with Perplexity usually the fastest to pick up new content. Treat that as a guide, not a guarantee.

Do I need an llms.txt file? No. There is no measured citation benefit. Put the effort into answer-first structure and community presence instead.

Is GEO worth it while AI traffic is still small? Yes, with clear eyes. Traditional search still sends roughly 345 times more traffic than ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity combined (Heeya), but AI-referred sessions grew 527 percent year over year in the first half of 2025 (Frase), and that traffic converts several times better. You are planting early in a channel that is compounding.

Getting cited by AI is not a writing trick, it is an operations habit: answer-first structure, a few sourced facts, a steady community presence, and pages you actually keep current. None of it is difficult. The hard part is doing it every week while you run everything else. That is the real constraint for a team of one, and it is the one worth solving, because the operators who show up consistently are the ones the answer engines learn to quote.
